“The Ireland Great Famine Institute’s purpose is to research all aspects of the “great famine” in order to provide a resource for everyone who wants to find information about the greatest tragedy in Europe during the 19th Century.
The organised transport of over 2 million of the Irish race brought our population from 8 million in 1845 to 2.9 million in 1962 – the greatest exodus in human history from such a small island population, in such a short space of time.”

Daniel O’Connell
In February 1847 Daniel O’Connell in his dying days made a speech to the House Of Commons imploring them to take action on Ireland’s great famine.
He stated clearly that if no action is taken, 25% of the Irish race would starve to death. He further stated the following: “Ireland is in your hands…your power. If you do not save her, she can’t save herself…I predict…that one quarter of the population would perish unless you come to her relief.”
